Spring is a beautiful time in the greater Boston area as well as Massachusetts, and a nice break from the months spent indoors. There are so many events, hobbies, and adventures to look forward to, especially when you live at Southgate.
Below are some activities to get you excited about all that spring has to offer here at Southgate:
1. Gardening
Spring is the perfect time to get excited about the growth and potential of our garden which is beginning to sprout. Thanks to careful care and love from our residents, the Southgate community garden grows into a beautiful outdoor work of art.
We encourage all of our residents to pick up hobbies that are fulfilling, and gardening is one of them! Grab some gardening gloves and make a list of potential flowers, plants, and even vegetables you’re interested in growing. You can even work together with other residents to learn more about gardening practices and the best time of year to plant different flowers.
2.Exercise outdoors
If you’re ready to take in the fresh air instead of strictly exercising inside, we’ve got great news for you! Our beautiful 3-acre campus includes a park for you to walk around in, plus our central location from Worcester and Boston is near tons of walking trails and nature centers. Consider spending the day taking a long walk along the Boston Freedom Trail or visiting the Minute Man National Historical Park.
The grounds of Southgate are perfect for a game of bocce on our bocce court, or you can try your hand at golf on the putting green!
Remember, if you choose to exercise outdoors to take lots of breaks when you become fatigued, hydrate often, and wear sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself from the sun.
3. Bird watching
Massachusetts is a great state for bird-watching enthusiasts! Mass Audubon has a comprehensive list of birds to watch in Massachusetts, including local wildlife centers to visit, such as Eagle Lake Wildlife Sanctuary and Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuary, both located in Central Massachusetts.
Southgate is also located in close distance to Boston, where more sanctuaries for bird watching are located. Take a trip to the Magazine Beach Park Nature Center or the Boston Nature Center & Wildlife Sanctuary, both of which feature over 150 species of birds.
The state bird in Massachusetts is the Black-capped Chickadee which can be found nearly anywhere in the state as long as there are trees and signs of wildlife present. Other popular bird species in the state include Gray Catbirds, Chipping Sparrows, and Blue Jays. Get out a pair of binoculars and take a look for yourself – you never know what type of bird you might find!
4. Day trips
One of the best parts about Southgate is our central location! There’s so much to do in the great state of Massachusetts, especially on a sunny spring day. Thankfully, Southgate is located in an excellent spot for you to enjoy the benefits of central Massachusetts and the city of Boston.
Head over to the New England Botanic Garden to see beautiful spring bulbs beginning to flower, or the The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University to learn more about trees and other plants.
You might choose to take a day trip to explore local museums like the Boston Museum of Fine Arts or the Institute of Contemporary Art or to spend your day shopping at malls and bookstores in the city along the eight blocks of Newbury Street.
If you choose to venture out, you’re sure to find something exciting to do either with fellow residents or your friends and family.
At Southgate at Shrewsbury, we’re proud to offer our residents plenty of amenities and resources to help fill their time and make great memories. From our walkable park to the outdoor garden, there’s something for everyone to enjoy as spring comes into bloom.
