At Southgate at Shrewsbury, our motto is “Exploring. Growing. Learning.” We want our residents to feel like they can pursue their passions and continue to learn new things, especially in retirement.
Lifelong learning is the process of continually seeking out new experiences and knowledge you didn’t have before. It’s especially important for seniors, who may not have as many opportunities to take classes or learn new skills or hobbies. Lifelong learning is just as it sounds: lifelong! It’s a pursuit of exploring subjects you’re unfamiliar with on a quest to become a more well-informed individual, and there’s no deadline as to when you have to achieve your goals.
Lifelong learning comes in many forms. You may choose to take a painting class and learn how to use various brushes to create a beautiful picture of a sunset. Or, you may want to learn more about the history of our country (and others) through articles and books. Lifelong learning is whatever you may of it, and you can benefit greatly from continuing to learn at every age.

Three benefits of lifelong learning
Better brain health: Learning is good for your brain! According to Spectrum Community Services, continuous learning among seniors may help improve your memory, reduce cognitive decline, and overall improve your brain function. Something as similar as learning a new skill or reading about a topic you didn’t know about before could help the health of your mind.
Increased confidence: When we learn something new, we feel good about ourselves! A higher self-esteem and confidence accompany learning and sharing our newfound knowledge. Think about the last time you created something you were proud of, or learned a fact you couldn’t wait to share with your friends or loved ones. Did you feel better about yourself after learning? If you did, you’re already reaping the rewards of learning!
Fostering new community relationships: Lifelong learning allows us to create new, meaningful relationships with the people around us. By joining a class or attending a seminar, you may meet someone with similar interests and form a bond and friendship.
Creating new relationships with other people allows you to grow and learn more about yourself as a person. Our friendships and relationships teach us so much about ourselves and allow us to deal with conflict, love, and trust. Not only does learning allow us to form these great relationships, but in these relationships we can continue to learn new things.
