The bonds we have with our family last forever! At Southgate at Shrewsbury, we want to encourage our residents to continue fostering intergenerational bonds with their loved ones, especially in retirement. Our campus is designed to invite guests to enjoy our spaces alongside our residents and make them feel at home.
The Importance of Family and Connection Throughout Life’s Stages
Connection and bonding aren’t just beneficial to older generations but to younger members of your family as well. The American Society of Aging reports that Intergenerational bonds offer the opportunity to “improve cognitive function, increase empathy, and live longer lives” for younger and older generations.
You can connect with those outside of your generation by bonding over the simple things in life, such as your shared interests. These may include books and movies or hobbies such as shopping, cookies, and gardening.
Southgate at Shrewsbury’s Spaces for Family to Visit
Southgate’s central location makes family visits extra special! With Downtown Worcester just minutes away and Boston approximately 45 minutes away, you have access to dining, shopping, and tourist atraction options all around you. You’re also welcome to dine in at Southgate, where we offer both casual and fine dining options.
We also have plenty of amenities that everyone in the family can take advantage of and enjoy, including our indoor swimming pool, bowling alley, and theatre where we routinely welcome many different speakers and performers.
And if you prefer to stay in over going out, invite your children and grandchildren in your home for some bonding time. You could cook a meal together, go through photo albums, watch your favorite movie, or just talk and catch up about your lives. Our living spaces are designed to give you the freedom to host and feel comfortable and at ease in your home.
Check out our Calendar of Events on the Southgate at Shrewsbury homepage for theatre performances, resident outings, public speakers, and more activities you can experience with your family (and new friends!).
The Health Benefits of Generational Bonding
According to a to a new study from the University of Michigan, having strong family connections, even when living far from family members, can benefit older adults. The study found that older adults without close relationships with family had lower mental health and social activity scores, while seniors who reported positive family relationships benefited from their family connections, whether they lived near or far from said family members.
At Southgate at Shrewsbury, we believe that exploring, growing, and learning is a fundamental part of life, and we have so much to learn from one another. We hope our residents find that our retirement community welcomes you and your loved ones to continue to grow, learn, and bond together through all of life’s stages.
