As we like to say here at Southgate at Shrewsbury retirement community: “Life begins at retirement.”
Without workplace schedules to keep and deadlines to meet, independent living can be a tremendously satisfying chapter of your life. It presents an opportunity to focus on those things you truly enjoy but perhaps never had enough time for. Likewise, independent living allows you to explore new interests and develop new passions.
Let’s take a look at several of the somewhat unconventional ways that Southgate makes retirement living interesting, fun, fulfilling and productive.
Calling all (Budding) Carpenters
Love the look and feel of wood? Always wanted to try your hand at crafting artwork out of sugar pine? Got an idea for a furniture knick-knack? Come one, come all to Southgate’s woodworking shop. You’ll find everything you need to cut, shape, stain and assemble wood items. Stroll by the studio and see where your imagination takes you.
By the way, never forget that time-tested English proverb that wise woodworkers worldwide live by: “Measure twice, cut once.”
Our Mission: To Rid the World of Gutter Balls
Never bowled a 300? Maybe you just need more practice!
At Southgate at Shrewsbury retirement community, you’ll find a four-lane candlepin bowling alley, ready to use at your convenience. Bowling is a fun, relaxing sport that allows you to burn calories in a non-strenuous way. And, like bicycling, it’s something you never forget how to do. Remember: The more you play, the better you get.
(That’s the theory, anyway!)
Six-ball in the Corner Pocket
While baseball, football and horseshoes all claim to be a game of inches, one activity can make an irrefutable claim to be a game of angles.
Pool. (Or, to use its more technically accurate term, pocket billiard.)
Here at Southgate, we feature a billiard and game room that offers friendly competition in everything from pool and ping pong to an infinite variety of card games. It’s your chance to show off those long-dormant shooting skills—or work on perfecting your sleight-of-hand techniques.
Fun fact: A ping pong match at the elite level lasts an average of 30 minutes, with top players often hitting the ball in excess of 100 miles-per-hour.
Come On In; the Water’s Fine
Swimming has always been considered one of the best exercises for burning calories without any undue wear and tear on the body. It’s an activity you can pursue at any age … and at your own speed. Southgate’s three-lane indoor swimming pool offers a perfect way to stay limber—whatever the time of year.
Disclaimer: Southgate cannot promise that you’ll ever attain the skill level of Michael Phelps. (We CAN promise, however, that you’ll find swimming to be fun, relaxing and a great opportunity to socialize.)
The Show Must Go On
At Southgate, independent living and culture go hand in hand. Our 200-seat theater—complete with balcony—is the ideal place to be entertained in style. Throughout the year, we present a diversity of stage performances, as well as the chance for you to participate as a cast member. (The only requirement is that you have been known to sing in the shower!)
