Come start the New Year by learning the ancient art of Tai Chi! Numerous studies have shown the effectiveness of Tai Chi in treating common diseases such as depression, arthritis, and heart disease. Tai Chi provides a health-care system for improving wellbeing and enhancing healthy aging. Exercises will be done with a slow, steady motion in order to minimize stress on the joints. Jean O’Connor has been practicing Tai Chi for more than seven years and is looking forward to bringing her passion for this ancient art to Southgate.

In 2016, for the first time in American political history, a woman was nominated by a major political party for President of the United States. Therefore, our topic for our January 11 Women’s Circle breakfast is “A History of Feminism: The Role of Worcester Women.” Our speaker is Lisa Connelly Cook, Professor of History and Political Science at Quinsigamond Community College. Lisa’s presentation will focus on two women in particular, Abby Kelly Foster and Lucy Stone. She will help us to explore these women’s lives and the critical role they played in the struggle for women’s rights. Lisa is a Ph.D. candidate in History at Clark University and is a co-founder of the Worcester Women’s History Project.

The first of our 2017 BSO Open Rehearsal series begins this morning! English conductor Bramwell Tovey is joined by virtuoso American organist Cameron Carpenter, who makes his BSO subscription series debut in a work written for him, At the Royal Majestic, by the innovative American composer Terry Riley, a founding father of musical minimalism. Cast and crew are called back to active duty this afternoon as we celebrate our 2016 anniversary show “Southgate Salutes the Service”. All residents are welcome to join in on the fun!
