Gary Hylander Lecture “An American Sampler: Secretaries of State”
Gary continues
the series with John Hay. Hay served as Secretary of State to two presidents: William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. During his tenure, he addressed the diplomatic and territorial issues that surfaced after the Spanish-American War as well as acquiring the Panama Canal Zone. His most important achievement however, was the “open door” policy in China, which expanded American trade and commercial interests in that country.
