Gary Hylander Lecture “An American Sampler: Secretaries of State”
Gary continues his series with John Foster Dulles. As President Eisenhower’s Secretary of State, Foster Dulles’ overriding foreign policy objective was to halt the spread of “aetheistic Communism”. As a devout Presbyterian, there was no room for neutrality in the Cold War. For western policymakers, it was now a moral question of choosing good over evil. “Better Dead than Red” was the watchword. Dulles threatened both the Soviet Union and Red China with “massive retaliation” if they broke the peace. He hoped to achieve a Pax Americana for the world. By the end of Dulles’ stewardship at the State Department, the United States was committed to eight security treaties and the defense of forty-two nations.
