Gary Hylander Lecture
This is the third chapter of Gary’s six part series entitled “Jefferson and Jackson: The Presidency Democratized” examining the early years of the Republic from the election of Thomas Jefferson in 1800 to the close of the Age of Jackson in 1850. Jefferson described his election as the “revolution of 1800” while the Jackson election broke the Virginia-Massachusetts monopoly on the White House. Major themes will include territorial expansion, slavery, the rise of political parties, the War of 1812 and the development of a national economy.
