Gary Hylander Lecture “An American Sampler: Secretaries of State”
Gary continues this series with William Henry Seward. William Henry Seward was one of the most important men of the nineteenth century. As governor of New York, founder of the Republican Party and out- spoken abolitionist, he was the odds-on favorite to receive the Republican Party’s nomination for president in 1860. Lincoln however, emerged as the party’s nominee while Seward secured the po- sition of Secretary of State. As Secretary of State, Seward not only managed foreign affairs but also played an important role in the political and mili- tary affairs of the Civil War years.
