Matthew Driscoll presents "Icelandic Rimur"
We welcome back Matthew James Driscoll to the podium at Southgate. Rímur (which means simply “rhymes”), is a uniquely Icelandic form of epic poetry, sung or chanted in a very special way. Rímur have been around since the 14th century and were for many centuries the most popular literary genre and form of entertainment in Iceland. Matthew is a Professor of Old Norse Philology at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, where he has been employed for the last 23 years. He studied in Scotland, Iceland and England, and has a doctorate from the University of Oxford. Most importantly, he is our own Barbara Driscoll’s son!
