Southgate’s 2018 Olympic Games!
It’s opening day of the sporting event of the year featuring 3 skilled, well trained, determined teams from both the east and west quadrants of Southgate at Shrewsbury. We come together in the spirit of team work, camaraderie, fellowship and the quest for extreme laughter and side-splitting (not an Olympic event) fun! Scores from both days events will be tallied to determine which team will capture the gold and the coveted Team Spirit Award award which also benefits the game’s official charity. Each day will challenge our Olympians’ calculating abilities to ‘hang in there’ and demonstrate their physical and intellectual prowess in celebration of “The Year of the Sloth”! Come find out what all the laughter is really all about! ALL residents are invited and encouraged to join us and cheer on your favorite Olympic contenders! Don’t be caught snoozing with this year’s mascot “Sebastian the Sloth” on hand to keep the games moooooving alllllong! Hey! You can catch those ZZZZZZzzzzzz’s later! Take the time to have some fun!

John Clark & Henry ’Thins’ Francis
Clarinetist/saxophonist John Clark and pianist Henry “Thins” Francis, have been performing together since 1996 and as such, have compiled a bag of unique arrangements to familiar tunes we all know and love. Their musical genre is best described as classic hot jazz, a distinct type of American music which developed during the first half of the 20th century, covering the beginnings of jazz through the swing era. John and Henry concentrate on the rich source known as The Great American Songbook, which encompasses music (mostly songs) written by Broadway composers, pop songwriters, and jazz musicians.

Matthew Driscoll presents “Iceland’s Manuscript Heritage”
Iceland—nowadays probably best known for its glaciers and volcanos, its financial crisis and its lively music scene—also has a long history as a hotbed of literary activity, starting with the Eddas and sagas of the medieval period and extending to the crime fiction of the present day. For most of that period, this literature circulated in handwritten form, as manuscripts, initially on calfskin, later on paper. The extent and quality of manuscript production in medieval Iceland is relatively well known; less well known is the fact that manuscript transmission remained the norm well into the modern era. Matthew will show some examples of Icelandic manuscript production from various periods, and discuss the nature of the literature they contain, their appearance and their significance for both Iceland and the wider world. Matthew is a Professor of Old Norse Philology at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, where he has been employed for the last 23 years. He studied in Scotland, Iceland and England, and has a doctorate from the University of Oxford. Most importantly, he is our own Barbara Driscoll’s son!
