Women’s Circle Breakfast
Our speaker for the September 12 Women’s Circle Breakfast is Carl Keyes, Associate Professor of History at Assumption College. His topic is “Selling Slavery: What Can We Learn from Newspaper Advertisements for Enslaved Men, Women and Children During the Colonial and Revolutionary Eras?” Drawing on an extensive archive of newspaper advertisements that promoted slaves for sale or offered rewards for capturing runaway slaves, Prof. Keyes will discuss the diverse experiences of enslaved men, women, and children in 18th century America. Some of those advertisements tell stories of exploitation and abuse, but others tell stories of resistance and survival. All of them testify to the prevalence of slavery in the thirteen colonies that became the United States, from New England to Georgia. Prof. Keyes is the Director of the Women’s Studies Program at Assumption College and earned his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University.

Author Talk with Melissa Maglio
“The Artist and the Army: A Lifetime of Creative Thought” is a compilation of work by a gentleman artist, peace-loving patriot and World War II army veteran. Warren Clark narrates his story of life as a young, ordinary GI, following the front lines across Europe and his subsequent battle with polio. Both events impacted the life ahead, the body of work he produced, and the dichotomy of feelings he shares as a humanist and lay minister during the civil rights era. Melissa Maglio is an Artist and writer working in Northborough. Last winter she undertook a remarkable journey into the past of her father, when she stumbled upon his writings and memories of his childhood and WWII experiences. She shares this small piece of personal history, along with his works of art in the book, The Artist and the Army.
